EBA 17FL Project

During the fall semester of 2017 at Marietta College, students worked hard to design the hydraulic fracturing plan for our simulated Utica/UPP Wunnenberg 38H test well in Harrison Co, OH. To accomplish this large task, the project was broken into four primary phases as detailed below.

  1. The drilling wrap-up phase summarized the drilling design completed during the spring 2017 semester. The focus of this phase was to prepare the casing tally for the Wunnenberg 38H and complete any remaining work needed on the drilling side.
  2. The pre-frac preparation phase built off the work done by the drilling team to prepare the well and pad site for completions activities. This phase was broken into toe (well prep), cellar (wellhead) prep, and water transfer/storage systems.
  3. The wireline schedule phase prepared the mechanical portions of the completion program, including the determination of stage spacing, gun and plug selection, number of clusters per stage, and a host of other necessary properties.
  4. The pump schedule phase then prepared the fluid properties and fluid quantity portions of the completion program, as well as supported proppant selection and determination of amount. Members further examined the types, amounts, and rate of chemical additives to run. These properties, including the determination of flow type based off pipe ID data and the composition of the fracturing fluid, became the primary focus of the team.

Each phase challenged students to plan out the required steps to perform a safe and successful frac of the Wunnenberg 38H. The project was orchestrated by a series of student project leaders who was supported by outside industry professionals. Students were given the opportunity to work in smaller working groups and get hands on experience with more focus on the detailed portions of each phase. This allowed younger members of the organization to experience and learn more about the unconventional side of the industry compared to the limited exposure they receive early on in their scholastic careers.
